Tournament Manager helps you score your Ryder Cup style tournament using Results Report 3j for all three formats: Fourball (2-person best ball), Foursomes (2-person alternate shot) and Singles (match play). In the "real" Ryder Cup there are two team that play against each other in different configurations for 28 total matches. Each of the 28 matches is worth 1 point to the winning side or 1/2 point if the match ends in a tie.

The following explanation shows you how to use Tournament Manager to run a Ryder Cup style tournament. Tournament Manager helps you arrive at results for each match.

Overall scoreboard

You will keep an overall scoreboard outside of Tournament Manager to keep track of how many matches each side has one. That scoreboard could be on a poster, a Google Sheet with a link on your website (all players would have access via their smartphone), or any other medium that would be helpful for the golfers in your Ryder Cup style tournament.

Set up tournaments or a tournament

Set up a tournament in Tournament Manager for each of your three formats: Fourball, Foursomes and Singles. You will, therefore, have three tournaments. Alternatively, you can create one tournament with three rounds. Each round will handle one of the three formats. Which of the two ways you use is up to you. In all three formats, you will designate in Settings that you will "Play in: 2-somes".

Odd or even

First decide which Ryder Cup team will be on odd numbered teams for Fourball and Foursomes, and odd numbered "Position on team" (listed 1st on team) for Singles. The opposing Ryder Cup team will be on even numbered teams for Fourball and Foursomes, and even numbered "Position on team" (listed 2nd on team) for Singles.

Pairing opposing players

For the purposes of explanation we will call the teams Red team (odd) and Blue team (even). You will use 3. Manage screen to pair the matches.

For Fourball and Foursomes, place Red team players in the odd-numbered teams and Blue team players in the even-numbered teams. Place opponents in adjacent teams. For instance, Bill and Victor from Red will be on Team #1 and their opponents, John and Tom from Blue, will be on Team #2 (see Figure 2 below).

For Singles, put opposing players into the same team/playing group (see Figure 6) with the Red player listed first and Blue player listed second.

Post scores, results and total match count

Post scores as usual on the 5. Scores screen in Tournament Manager. After you post scores for each of the three formats, use Results Report 3j to tally the matches. You will keep the total count of matches won by each side (28 points in a standard Ryder Cup) outside of Tournament Manager. This could be a poster at the course or on a document on your website.

Below you will find the report setup as well as sample scoring screens used to count holes won and to determine the winner of the match.

Fourball (2-person best ball)

For your Fourball results, you will use Results Report 3j with the setup shown in Figure 1 below.

Figure 1

The report will look something like the image in Figure 2. Compare opponent scores on each hole to see which team won more holes for the match.

Figure 2

Foursomes (alternate shot)

Set up your Results 3j report as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3

The report will look something like the image in Figure 4. Compare opponent scores on each hole to see which team won more holes for the match.

Singles (match play)

Set up your Results 3j report as shown in Figure 5 for your Singles results.

Figure 5

It may seem counterintuitive to use a team Results Report - 3j - for Singles matches, but it accomplishes what you need it to do. It shows you with the highlights which player had the lower score and won the hole. Just count the highlights for each player to determine who won the match. If they had the same number of highlighted holes, they tied the match for 1/2 point each.
